Miaka kadhaa iliyopita, Bi Mohamed alikuwa akiishi bila kazi yoyote isipokuwa kutekeleza majukumu ya nyumbani tu kama mke, ikiwemo ulezi, kupika na kutunza nyumba. Ila kwa sasa yeye ni mkulima na mfanyabiashara hodari wa mboga aliyejikimu binafsi. Miongoni wa mimea anayopanda ni mchicha, spinachi, sukumawiki, hoho na mnavu. Alipokea maarifa ya kupanda na kukuza mboga kutumia matairi kupitia elimu ya mitandaoni, hasa TikTok na YouTube. Shughuli za kilimo chake cha mboga huzitekeleza bila matumizi ya dawa au kemikali. Upekee wa mboga zake ni kwamba badala ya kunyunyiza kemikali, yeye huthamini sana matumizi ya michanganyiko asilia, ikiwemo majani ya mwembe na mwarobaini katika kupigana na wadudu waharibifu shambani. Mbolea yake anayotumia pia ni ile ya mchanganyiko wa vitu kama vile mboji (compost) iliyooza na kutayarika vizuri. Yeye husambaza mboga zake kila wiki kwa wafanyabiashara wa ndani ya soko la manispaa ya Hindi. Hoteli nyingi na mikahawa ya mjini Hindi pia huodesha mboga zake. Isitoshe, Bi Mohamed huzungusha bidhaa zake kwa pikipiki kwenye vijiji na vitongojini ambapo anakiri kuvuna pakubwa. "Mimi situmii kemikali ya aina yoyote kutekeleza kilimo changu cha mboga. Nimeelekeza fikra na nguvu zangu zote kuendeleza kilimo hai. Hujihisi mwenye furaha ninapozalisha mboga ambazo ninajua hazina madhara yoyote kwa wateja wangu nikifahamu fika kwamba nimezikuza kwa njia asili kupitia kilimo hai," akasema Bi Mohamed. Wiki nzuri yeye huuza mboga za kati ya Sh4,000 na Sh5,000 kwani mara nyingi mavuno ya mboga kwenye bustani yake hupanda au kushuka. "Sijuti kamwe kuanzisha mbinu hii ya kukuza mboga kwenye magurudumu ya zamani. Haya matairi huonekana na wengi kuwa ni takataka tu ila kwangu yamefaulisha kilimo na kunipa ajira," akasema Bi Mohamed. Ili kuhakikisha kuna usambazaji wa kutosha kwa maji kwenye mboga zake bustanini, Bi Mohamed amechimba kisima ambacho amekiunganisha kupitia mashini ya kupiga maji na mabomba. Mboga anazouza sokoni na mitaani zimemwezesha kupata mtaji unaomsaidia kuchangia kukimu majukumu ya nyumbani, ikiwemo ununuzi wa chakula, kulipia watoto karo na mengineyo. "Nashukuru. Kupitia kilimo cha mboga cha matairini, nimegeuzwa kutoka hali ya zamani ambapo nilikuwa mke wa nyumba tu. Nilimtegemea mume wangu kukidhi mahitaji yote ya nyumbani na yangu binafsi. Ila leo najisimamia mwenyewe kifedha na hata kumsaidia bwanangu kutekeleza baadhi ya majukumu ya kifamilia," akasema Bi Mohamed. Aliwashauri wakazi wa Lamu waliojikita katika mtazamo kwamba eneo hilo ni ngome ya uvuvi kama kitega uchumi cha pekee kuondoa fikra au dhana hiyo. "Kupitia juhudi zangu nimebaini kuwa ukulima, hasa ule wa mboga na ufugaji hufanya vyema eneo hili letu. Badala ya kutegemea uvuvi, wajaribu kilimo na katu hawatajuta ilmuradi wawe wavumilivu," akasema Bi Mohamed. Katika kutekeleza uzalishaji mboga kwenye matairi ya zamani, Bw Katana anashauri kuhakikisha wakulima wanaweka udongo uliochanganywa vizuri na mbolea ndani ya matairi hayo. Kinachofuata ni mja kuumwagilia udongo husika maji kabla ya kupanda mbegu au miche ya mboga kama vile spinachi, sukumawiki, vitunguu, nyanya nakadhalika.
