Ukuzaji wa mimea-tiba ulivyoibuka kimbilio kwa wenye uhaba wa ardhi Kiambu
KAUNTI ya Kiambu inaendelea kupoteza ardhi ya kuendesha kilimo kutokana na ukaribu wake kwa jiji kuu la Nairobi, ongezeko la idadi ya watu na ukuaji wa majengo ya makazi na biashara. Kwa sababu hiyo wakulima wamegeukia mimea yenye thamani ya juu isiyohitaji shamba kubwa kukuzwa, miongoni mwao mimea tiba, ili kuunda hela nzuri. Kati ya wakulima hao ni George Wang'ang'a na William Gitau, vijana barobaro kutoka kata ya Kagaa katika wadi ya Kamburu. Kati ya mimea tiba ambayo wanakuza ni pamoja na orange thyme, lemon thyme, garden sage, mint, white oregano, African blue basil, lemon grass, verbena, lemon balm, lavender, marjoram, stevia na blue vervain. Wang'ang'a asema ingawa Kiambu inafahamika kwa kilimo cha kuzalisha mimea ya chakula kama vile mahindi, maharagwe, ndizi na maparachichi waliamua kuzamia kilimo cha mimea tiba kutokana na uhaba wa mashamba katika sehemu kubwa ya kaunti hiyo ambayo pia inafahamika kwa kukuza majani chai kwa wingi. Aidha, alihoji kuwa umiliki wa mashamba mengi eneo hilo ni wa wakongwe au kifamilia hivyo huwa vigumu vijana kutengewa kipande kwa ajili ya kilimo. Katika kipande cha robo ekari wawili hao wanakuza zaidi ya mimea tiba 30. Walivutiwa na kilimo hiki kutokana na mapenzi yao ya kutunza mazingira. Pia lengo lao ni kutoa suluhu la kudumu kwa watu ambao wanaugua maradhi mbalimbali kupitia mimea hiyo asilia. Msukumo huo ulichochewa na hamasisho kutoka kwa shirika la Healthy Living Tech-Agri Campaign, ambalo huwaleta pamoja wakulima wa mimea tiba na mashirika husika ya kijamii. Wang'ang'a anatoa mfano wa thyme ambao husaidia kurahisisha shughuli ya kumeng'enya chakula tumboni. Aidha, lemon grass na rosemary hutumika kama kiungo cha kuandaa chai. "Mimea tiba inapendwa na watu wanaoishi mijini maana hawapati vyakula asilia kwa wingi. Vile vile, inatumika sana na watu wanaougua maradhi yasiyoambukiza kama vile saratani au shinikizo la damu," aliambia Akili Mali wakati wa mahojiano hivi majuzi. Kwa upande wake Gitau asema kilimo cha mimea tiba ni cha manufaa sana kwa sababu mavuno yake ni mengi kutokana na kipande kidogo tu cha ardhi. Pili, anasisitizia hitaji lake kubwa na soko tayari lenye uhakika si tu humu nchini bali pia kimataifa. Tatu, anahoji kwamba wakulima hutumia gharama ndogo sana kwa sababu mimea tiba haihitaji pembejeo nyingi kama vile mbolea au dawa za kemikali kuua wadudu kwani inakuzwa katika mazingira yake asilia. "Mimea hii hutumika kuimarisha virutubisho mchangani. Pia kwa nyuki ni malighafi ya kuzalisha nta inayotumika katika kuunda asali," asema. Gitau aeleza kwamba alipata ujuzi wa kukuza aina mbalimbali ya mimea tiba baada ya kutangamana na mashirika kama vile Shirika la Umoja wa Mataifa kuhusu Chakula na Kilimo (FAO). Pia amekuwa akishirikiana na Wizara ya Kilimo ya Kaunti ya Kiambu miongoni mwa mashirika mengine kuhamasisha wakulima wadogo kuhusu manufaa ya kukuza mimea yenye thamani. Aidha makundi ya akina mama na vijana kutoka Kiambu yameanza kuona umuhimu wa mimea tiba kama kitega uchumi. Kwa sababu ni kilimo kinachohitaji mtaji mdogo, faida yake ni kubwa ikizingatiwa kuwa baadhi ya mavuno huuzwa hadi Sh6,000 kwa kilo. Lakini pia kuna changamoto kama vile uhaba wa mvua. Vile vile, si wawekezaji wengi wamejitosa kufadhili kilimo hicho cha mimea tiba.
