Wakili anavyobadili maisha ya wafugaji maeneo kame
KATIKA maeneo kame ya Laikipia, Samburu na Isiolo ambako kwa miaka mingi wafugaji wamekuwa wakitegemea madalali kuuza mifugo yao kwa bei ya hasara, mambo yanaanza kubadilika. Leo hii wengi wanapata wanunuzi, kufuatilia bei za soko, kupata huduma za mifugo na hata kuomba mikopo yote hayo kupitia simu za mkononi bila kulazimika kusafiri mamia ya kilomita. Maria Mbeneka Mutua ndiye mstari wa mbele kuleta mabadiliko hayo. Mbeneka ni wakili kitaaluma ila pia ameingilia sekta ya ufugaji kwa kuzindua mfumo unaowapa wafugaji, hasa wanawake, nafasi ya kunufaika zaidi kupitia jasho lao. Kupitia jukwaa la kidijitali la Flockr lililoundwa na kampuni yake Ranch Experts Limited, Mbeneka amekuwa na mchango mkubwa katika kuboresha maisha ya zaidi ya wafugaji 4,500 maeneo ya Laikipia, Samburu na Isiolo. "Karibu asilimia 70 ya wanaonufaika ni wanawake na vijana ambao wamepata mafunzo ya ufugaji wa kisasa, biashara na matumizi ya teknolojia," aliambia Akili Mali wakati wa mahojiano. Zaidi ya miaka 20 iliyopita Mbeneka alikuwa akijishughulisha na biashara ya uchinjaji nyama eneo la Rumuruti, Laikipia. Akiwa mfanyabiashara wa nyama alibaini kuwa ubora wa bidhaa hiyo ulitegemea moja kwa moja namna mifugo walifugwa. Ufahamu huo ulimfanya abadili mbinu. Badala ya kusubiri mifugo wafike kichinjioni alianza kutangamana na wafugaji ili kuboresha uzalishaji, afya ya mifugo na miundomsingi ya masoko. Ndipo uasisi wa Ranch Experts ulichipukia. Mwaka 2020 akaanzisha mpango wa goat-for-delivery Laikipia. Kupitia mpango huo wakunga wa jadi walipewa mbuzi kwa kila mama waliyemshawishi kujifungua hospitalini. Karibu mbuzi 450 walisambazwa, na wengi wao walizaana wakawa kitega uchumi cha familia nyingi. "Tuligundua wanawake hao hawakuwa wahudumu wa afya pekee, bali pia walinzi muhimu wa mifugo katika jamii zao," anasema. Kutokana na matukio aliyoshuhudia Mbeneka aliunda mitandao ya wanawake wanaokusanya mifugo kwa ajili ya biashara na baadaye akaanzisha Flockr, jukwaa la kidijitali linalowaunganisha wafugaji na wanunuzi ili kutoa huduma za mifugo, taarifa za bei ya soko, usafirishaji, bima na mikopo. "Kupitia Flockr wafugaji hupata taarifa hizo zote na huduma moja kwa moja," aeleza. Jukwaa hilo limesaidia wafugaji kufanya maamuzi bora kuhusu uzalishaji na mauzo, huku ikipunguza utegemezi wa madalali. Sekta ya ufugaji Kenya ina thamani ya karibu Sh1 trilioni, lakini bado haijatumia kikamilifu fursa zilizopo kutokana na ukosefu wa mifumo bora ya taarifa na masoko. Mbeneka anataja gharama kubwa za usafirishaji wa mifugo, ushuru wa kaunti – ada inayotozwa kusafirisha mizigo na bidhaa kutoka kaunti moja hadi nyingine - ucheleweshaji wa vibali na athari za mabadiliko ya tabianchi kuwa miongoni mwa changamoto zinazozuia sekta hiyo kunawiri. Hata hivyo, anaamini suluhisho lipo katika kujenga mifumo inayothamini mfugaji. "Licha ya changamoto hizo ninaamini mifumo bora, matumizi ya teknolojia na kupiga jeki wanawake ndiyo njia ya kufanya sekta ya mifugo kuwa kichochea kikubwa cha maendeleo ya kiuchumi nchini," anahoji. Jitihada zake zilimfanya kutambuliwa katika Maonyesho ya Mifugo ya Tri-Nations 2026 yaliyofanyika nchini Tanzania, ambapo alitunukiwa Tuzo ya Mwanamke Bora mwaka huu. "Nilipotangazwa mshindi mwanzoni sikuamini. Lakini baadaye nikatambua kuwa kazi tuliyofanya na wafugaji imepiga hatua za mmbali kuliko nilivyodhania," asema kwa tabasamu.
