KILIMO cha kisasa hakiwezi kutenganishwa na teknolojia, biashara, uwekezaji na ubunifu, mambo ambayo yanaweza kuwapa vijana, hasa kizazi cha Gen Z, nafasi muhimu katika kuamua mustakabali wa sekta hiyo. Elizabeth Nsimadala, Rais wa Kikanda wa Shirikisho la Wakulima wa Afrika Mashariki (EAFF), anasema vijana wanapaswa kuwa sehemu ya maamuzi kuhusu mifumo ya chakula badala ya kuonekana kama wanaopaswa kunufaika kupitia miradi na misaada. "Tunapaswa kushirikisha wakulima, hasa kizazi cha Gen Z kama wahusika na washirika muhimu katika mabadiliko ya mifumo ya chakula," Elizabeth anasema. Kulingana naye, mara nyingi wakulima na mashirika yanayowaleta pamoja huonekana kama wanaopaswa kunufaika na misaada, ilhali ni wahusika wakubwa ambao mifumo ya uzalishaji ikiboreshwa watakuwa na mchango mkubwa. Elizabeth anasema vijana wa Gen Z wana nafasi kubwa katika sekta ya kilimo kwa sababu mtandao wa uzalishaji chakula ni biashara, uwekezaji, unajumuisha teknolojia, una masoko na zaidi ya yote kuangazia usalama wa chakula si tu Kenya bali kote ulimwenguni. "Tunahitaji vijana washiriki katika mijadala na wajieleze wenyewe kwa sababu kilimo kinapiku uzalishaji. Kina mengi yanayowahitaji kuchangia ikizangatiwa kuwa Gen Z wanaelewa kwa kina masuala ya teknolojia," anasema. EAFF inashirikisha vijana na wanawake kwenye shughuli zake, ikiwa ni pamoja na kujumuisha asilimia 30 ya vijana na asilimia 40 ya wanawake kwenye miradi yake. Shirikisho hilo pia limekuwa likisaidia vijana kupata fedha na kuboresha biashara zinazoweza kuvutia wawekezaji. Hatuongei kwa niaba ya vijana; tunawaalika washiriki katika mijadala," anasema. Kupitia mradi wa Africa Youth in Agri-business Platform ulioanzishwa na EAFF kwa ushirikiano na FAO, zaidi ya vijana 100,000 wamenufaika kwa mafunzo ya kilimo na biashara. EAFF, pia, imewekeza kima cha Dola 2 milioni, sawa na Sh258.8 milioni, kusaidia vijana. Hata hivyo, upatikanaji wa fedha bado ni kikwazo kikubwa. Elizabeth anasema tafiti zilizofanywa Kenya, Uganda na Rwanda zimeonyesha kuwa ukosefu wa dhamana ni mojawapo ya sababu zinazozuia vijana kupata mikopo. "Vijana wengi hawana ardhi. Hawamiliki ardhi, hivyo hawana hati za umiliki, na linapokuja suala la kupata fedha, hiyo huwa ni hitaji la kwanza na inakuwa kikwazo kwao kupata mikopo kwenye mashirika ya kifedha haswa benki na vyama vya ushirika," anasema. Aidha, EAFF inapendekeza mifumo mipya ya ufadhili inayotumia historia ya uzalishaji wa mkulima badala ya kutegemea dhamana au hati ya shamba pekee. Kwa mfano, kijana ambaye amekuwa katika kilimo kwa miaka miwili au mitatu na ana takwimu za uzalishaji anaweza kutumia data hiyo kuomba fedha au kupata mkataba wa mauzo ya baadaye kama dhamana. Hali kadhalika, teknolojia inaweza kusaidia kubadilisha kilimo kuwa biashara yenye faida kwa vijana. EAFF imeanzisha e-Granary, jukwaa la kidijitali linalounganisha wakulima na masoko ya pembejeo, huduma, uuzaji mazao, mikopo na huduma nyingine muhimu. Zaidi ya wakulima 250,000 tayari wako kwenye jukwaa hilo, huku taarifa kuhusu ukubwa wa mashamba yao na mazao wanayozalisha ikitumika kuwaunganisha na masoko na mashirika ya kifedha. Kulingana na Elizabeth, ambaye ni Rais wa Shirikisho la EAFF mradi huo utasaidia kuimarisha mashirika ya wakulima. Anasema kuna haja pia ya vijana kuelewa kuwa kilimo ni fursa kubwa ya biashara katika bara ambalo linaagiza chakula chenye thamani ya zaidi ya Dola 100 bilioni, sawa na Sh12.93 trilioni, kila mwaka. "Fedha hizi zinatiwa kibindoni na mkulima aliye nje ya bara la Afrika. Tuna uwezo wa kuzalisha chakula hiki hapa Afrika," anasema. Kwa Gen Z, anasema kilimo hakipaswi kuonekana kama kazi ya kulima kwa jembe pekee, bali sekta inayotoa nafasi katika biashara, masoko, teknolojia, uwekezaji na ubunifu.
