BAADHI ya maudhui katika mitandao ya kijamii hasa watoto wanapokaribia kufunga shule kwa likizo, huwa ni watu wakiulizana kuhusu bajeti zao za chakula. Mbali na kiwango cha chakula, kuna wale wanaozungumzia saa ambapo wana wao hutaka kula, wengine hata wakisaka chakula usiku wa manane. Hata hivyo, wataalamu wa lishe wanasema kuwa watoto hawa ambao pia wako katika umri ambao muda wao mwingi wanatumia katika masomo, asilimia ishirini ya kiwango cha chakula wanachokula kila mara hutumika na ubongo. Hamu ya kula imezidi "Hata mwanangu ambaye ana umri wa miaka 10 pia nimegundua kuwa hamu yake ya kula imezidi kuongezeka kinyume na alivyokuwa akila hapo awali. Miaka ya hapo awali haswa walipokuwa chini ya umri wa miaka saba, nilikuwa nikiwalazimisha wote wawili kula lakini kwa sasa wanataka chakula wenyewe tena kwa wingi," anaongeza Tom. Mzazi huyo ambaye anaelewa sayansi ya matumizi ya lishe mwilini miongoni mwa watoto wanaobalehe, anasema kuwa kwa sasa jukumu lake ni kuhakikisha kuwa wanawe hawakosi chakula ilikuwasaidia kukua. "Huwa namruhusu mwanangu ale kwa sababu najua atafika katika umri ambapo hamu yake ya chakula itapunguka jinsi tu yangu ilivyopunguka. Nilipokuwa kwenye umri wa kubalehe nilikuwa nikila jinsi tu mwanangu anavyokula kwa sasa. Nafahamu kuwa anahitaji nguvu nyingi za kutembea, kucheza na pia kwenye shughuli tofauti maanake ni vigumu sana kumpata akiwa ameketi tu na kutulia sehemu moja akiwa nyumbani," anasimulia. Alfrique Otieno Mwana, pia anashuhudia hali sawia kwake. "Kifungua mimba wangu yuko katika Gredi 10. Wakati alipokuwa nyumbani kwenye likizo na kuketi kwenye meza alikuwa akipakua chakula kingi ambacho alikuwa akila chote. Mwenzake mdogo ambaye pia ni mvulana wa umri wa miaka 10 pia hula kiwango cha juu cha chakula kinyume na hapo awali," anasema mzazi huyo. Wakati uo huo, Alfrique anasema kuwa kifungua mimba wake ambaye yuko katika shule ya bweni huwa na hamu ya juu ya chakula kutokana na tamaa ya kukosa chakula cha nyumbani kwa muda. "Anapokuja nyumbani wakati wa likizo anataka sana kula chapati na akipewa moja au mbili hashibi. Unapata anakula tatu au nne ndiposa anashiba. Huwa namhimiza ale hadi ashibe kwa sababu hivyo ndivyo babangu alivyonifunza kula ilmradi siharibu chakula. Ninapomuona mwanangu anapokuwa na hamu ya juu ya kula chakula najua ni umri wake ambao ataupita siku za usoni," anasema. Ishara ya kukua Kama tu Tom, mzazi Alfrique pia anakumbuka jinsi wanawe walipokuwa wachanga hawakuwa na hamu ya kula chakula. Kuwaona hamu yao ikiongezeka ni ishara kwake kuwa wanakua. "Wakati wakiwa kwenye likizo wanakula mara tatu kwa siku na pia wanakula vitafunio katikati. Kitinda mimba wangu wa umri wa miaka miwili angali hana hamu ya kula hivyo mara nyingi anakula kiamsha kinywa kuchelewa kisha anakula chajio mapema kwa sababu huwa anaamka kuchelewa na pia analala mapema," anasema Alfrique. Kiwango cha lishe katika umri wa watoto wanaobalehe hutegemea na viwango vyao vya ukuaji. Haya ni kwa mujibu wa mtaalamu wa lishe ya kitabibu katika hospitali ya, Aga Khan University Hospital, Valentine Young Kwadha. Wakati uo huo, anaeleza kuwa mabadiliko yanayoendelea katika mwili wa mtoto kuanzia umri wa miaka 10 huhitaji ale chakula kingi zaidi ya alivyokuwa akila hapo awali. Hali hii anasema huchangia mtoto anayebalehe kula angalau asilimia 25 ya chakula zaidi ya kiwango ambacho mtu mzima katika familia hula. "Haistahili kuwa jambo la kushtua kuona mtoto anayebalehe akila chakula kingi kwa sababu hicho ndicho kiwango wanachohitaji kulingana na shughuli za kimwili..Mahitaji ya nguvu mwilini mwa watoto hawa kwa ujumla huanzia 2,000 hadi 3,000 kilokalori kila siku. Hii ni sawa na kusema kuwa mtoto anakula mara sita kwa siku kwa sababu wanakula mara nyingi na kiwango cha chakula wanachokula pia kinaongezeka," anaeleza mtaalamu huyo. Kiwango cha mazoezi ya mwili Pia anasema kuwa kiwango cha chakula watoto hawa hula hutofautiana kulingana na urefu, jinsia na kiwango cha mazoezi miongoni mwao. Kwa mfano, mtoto wa umri wa miaka 13 aliye na urefu wa sentimita 120 atakula chakula zaidi ya mwenzake wa umri sawa lakini urefu wake ni sentimita 100. "Jinsi mwili unavyotumia nguvu na virutubisho kuanzia umri wa miaka 10 hadi 13 huwa juu miongoni mwa watoto wavulana ukilinganishwa na wasichana. Katika umri huu, miili ya wasichana huunda seli za mafuta zaidi huku miili ya wavulana ikiunda misuli. Misuli inahitaji nguvu na virutubisho zaidi," anasema Valentine. Anawashauri wazazi wa watoto walio katika umri wa kubalehe kuwa watoto hao wanastahili kula kila baada ya saa 3-4. Kiamsha kinywa, chakula cha mchana na chajio anasema zinastahili kuwa sehemu kuu ya mlo wao. Katikati ya milo hiyo, anasema kuwa watoto hao wanastahili kula vitafunio kama vile matunda, njugu na sehemu ya kile walichobakisha wakati wa kiamsha kinywa kwa kuzingatia lishe bora. "Sahani ya mtoto anayebalehe inastahili kuwa na wanga, vitamini na protini. Katika umri huu, watoto wanahitaji protini zaidi. Kwa mfano, ikiwa aina ya chakula cha protini unaowalisha ni mayai, basi watahitaji mayai mawili wakati wa kiamsha kinywa, mayai mawili wakati wa chakula cha mchana na mayai mawili kwa chajio. Mayai hayo yatawapa kiwango cha protini wanayohitaji siku hiyo," anaeleza Valentine. Vilevile, anawashauri wazazi kutowalisha watoto zaidi au kiwango cha chini cha chakula ili kuzuia watoto hao kukabiliwa na athari za utapiamlo. Hali hiyo huweza kubainishwa kupitia ushauri wa mtaalamu wa lishe kwa sababu kila mtoto huhitaji ushauri binafsi kulingana na kiwango cha lishe miili yao inahitaji. Kadhalika, anahimiza wazazi kuhakikisha kuwa watoto hawa wanapata usingizi wa kutosha wa kati ya saa nane hadi 10 mfululizo kila usiku, muda ambao pia hawastahili kuwa wanakula.
