KWA muda wa miezi kadhaa, wataalamu wa hali ya anga wamekuwa wakiutahadharisha ulimwengu kuhusu ujio wa mvua ya El Nino. Kulingana na ripoti za kitaalamu, kipindi cha kuanza kwa mvua hiyo inayotarajiwa kuzua madhara tele kimewadia. Huku mvua hiyo kubwa ikitarajiwa kunyesha katika maeneo mengi ya Kenya kuanzia Oktoba, Serikali imewaonya wananchi wanaoishi kando ya mito, katika maeneo ya mabonde na maeneo mengine yenye hatari kuhama mapema na kutafuta makao salama. Ushauri huu haupaswi kupuuzwa. Ni wito wa kuokoa maisha. Historia ya Kenya imejaa mifano ya madhara yanayosababishwa na mvua kubwa. Mafuriko huvamia makazi, mito huvunja kingo, hubomoa madaraja na kuvuruga barabara. Katika maeneo yenye miinamo, udongo uliolowa maji unaweza kusababisha maporomoko ya ardhi, huku nyumba zisizo imara zikiwa katika hatari ya kuporomoka. Wakazi wanaoishi kando ya mito na katika maeneo yaliyotambuliwa kuwa hatari wanapaswa kuzingatia maagizo ya kuhama. Familia katika maeneo kama vile Budalang'i na Nyando zinapaswa pia kuwa na mpango wa dharura unaoeleza mahali pa kwenda, njia salama za kufika huko na namna ya kuwasiliana iwapo wanafamilia watatenganishwa na mafuriko. Aidha, wananchi wanapaswa kusaidia mamlaka kusafisha mifereji na njia za kupitisha maji. Mifereji iliyozibwa na taka huzidisha mafuriko, hasa mijini. Serikali za kaunti nazo zinapaswa kuhakikisha mifereji inasafishwa, madaraja na barabara zinazohitaji matengenezo zinashughulikiwa na vituo vya kuhifadhi waathiriwa vinaandaliwa mapema. Madereva nao hawapaswi kujaribu kuvuka maji yanayotiririka kwa kasi. Maji yanayosonga yana nguvu kubwa na yanaweza kulisomba gari pamoja na abiria wake. Wazazi wanapaswa kuwaonya watoto dhidi ya kucheza au kuvuka mito na mifereji iliyojaa maji. Muhimu zaidi, wananchi wanapaswa kufuatilia taarifa za hali ya hewa na maonyo kutoka kwa mamlaka badala ya kutegemea uvumi mitandaoni. Serikali imesema imeanza kutumia viongozi wa mashinani, wakiwemo machifu na viongozi wa Nyumba Kumi, kufikisha tahadhari kwa wananchi. Madhara ya El Nino yanaweza kupunguzwa ikiwa tahadhari zitachukuliwa mapema. Serikali na wananchi wana jukumu la kuhakikisha kuwa tahadhari hizi kuhusu mvua hiyo zinazingatiwa kwa dhati. Wakati wa kuhama ni kabla ya mafuriko, nao wakati wa kujiandaa ni sasa. Tusisubiri maafa yatufundishe thamani ya tahadhari na maisha yetu.
